Blue Flag Water Iris grows in wet to medium soil. It can be grown and placed in pots in your pond or grown naturally at the edges of your pond. It can be grown in wet sand, wet-silty-sand, sedge peat or just plain muck. Very easy to grow and adds some colour to your pond.

Iris Versicolor grows in full sun or partial shade and the soil must be damp at all times or you can also submerge it in the shallow end of your pond.

Growing Northern Blue Flag Water Iris

Germination Instructions:

1. Soak your seeds in a bowl of water for 3-4 days, this will help soften the seed shell
2. Change the water everyday so that it does not become stagnant. You can also aerate the water with an airstone if you like
3. Plant your seeds in trays (with no holes in bottom) with garden soil 1/4" deep and place in full sun or partial shade
4. Water the tray consistently to make sure it stays wet and continue to monitor it daily also.
5. Furthermore, do not allow the seeds to dry out.

Furthermore if you want to speed up the germination process we like to put them in the fridge for 40-50 days before planting. This makes them go through a cold period which tends to help germination. You can also plant your Blue Flag Water Iris seeds out in your ponds edge/bog directly and let them go through the cold period naturally and come spring they will germinate. Iris Versicolor as well as Yellow Flag Iris are very easy to grow. If you have a small greenhouse or if you want you can make a small one out of some wood and plastic and this too will certainly help for germination as well.
