Growing & Planting Garlic Chives

Planting Seeds

Garlic chive seeds can be started indoors or you can direct sow seeds outdoors after last frost. To start indoors plant seeds in a flat and provide a heating mat to help with germination. A sunny window or the use of a LED grow light can be used. Garlic chives are tolerant to many soil types, although they prefer moist well drained soil. They can be planted in full sun or partial shade. When direct sowing seeds, place seeds under soil surface up to 1/4" about 4"-6" apart in rows 18" apart. Garlic chive seeds should germinate in approximately 14 days. You can also grow garlic chives indoors to be able to have fresh herbs 365 days a year.

Growing

Keep the soil moist, to do so you can apply a generous amount of mulch to conserve moisture and control weeds during the growing season. Garlic chives will spread each year by root division and by seeds. Each year you can divide your garlic chives for new plantings. If you want to control and prevent them from reproducing by reseeding itself, simply remove the developing seed heads as they appear.

Harvesting Chives

For the first year after planting your garlic chives from seeds they should not be harvested. The first year should be devoted to strong root development. In the second year you can begin to harvest garlic chives when the plants are about 6-8". Simply use a pair of scissors and cut them 1/2" above the soil. By cutting your chives and harvesting often helps increase production signaling the plant towards new growth. Keeps in the refrigerator for up to a week.
