Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage seeds is a popular early cabbage variety with excellent flavour. This heirloom cabbage is popular because it has good resistance against splitting. Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage has pointed heads and grow to an average of 2-3 lbs. It's a great cabbage variety to grow in the home vegetable garden. This cabbage variety was first grown in the United States by Francis Brill of Jersey City, New Jersey in 1840. It's an excellent early cabbage variety, great for making coleslaw. Meanwhile it's excellent for making soups, stews, sauerkraut, and delicious cabbage rolls as well. Ready to harvest in about 60 days.

Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage Seeds - Growing Cabbage From Seeds

SOWING:

Start cabbage seeds indoors 8-12 weeks before your last frost. Plant seeds 1/4" deep in individual pots or seed trays. The first crop of cabbage should be mature before the heat of summer so plant the seedlings about 4 weeks before the last expected frost. Plant seedlings 12"-18" apart with a spacing of 36" between rows while also burying the stems half way up. For a fall crop direct sow or transplant seedlings in midsummer.

If hard frosts are expected cover young seedlings. Lastly apply mulch to regulate soil temperature, conserve moisture and control weeds.

HARVESTING:

Harvest cabbage when feels firm and reaches a good size. Smaller cabbages tend to be more tender, while large cabbage heads from fall store very well over the winter.
