Growing Rhubarb Plants

Planting
Rhubarb plants grow best in full sun however it can tolerate partial shade too. Plan ahead the location where you'll be growing your rhubarb as it should have rich soil and good drainage. Good drainage is very important as rhubarb will rot if kept too wet. Rhubarb plants are also heavy feeders so you should have some compost or rotted manure mixed in with the soil. Rhubarb can be planted in late fall or early spring. When planting rhubarb they should be spaced about 2-4 feet apart and 3-4 feet between rows. Plant the rhubarb crown in soil with tip facing up with about 2 inches of soil over the top. Be sure to water your plants after planting.

Harvesting
During the first growing season you shouldn't harvest any stalks. Beginning in the second year you can start harvesting some. During this time it allows the rhubarb plants to become more established. On the third growing year you can harvest heavily. Rhubarb season last about 8-10 weeks.
