Waltham 29 Broccoli seeds is a popular heirloom open pollinated broccoli variety that was developed in 1950 at the University of Massachusetts in Waltham, MA. This compact broccoli plant grows about 24" tall and produces delicious medium sized heads of broccoli 6-8" wide that are dark green-blue with marvelous flavour. Once you harvest the main head it will continue to grow some side shoots of broccoli along the stem as long as the weather remains favourable. This broccoli variety loves cooler weather, withstands cold and can also tolerate a light frost. Be sure to also plant more seeds midsummer for a second harvest come late fall. Waltham Broccoli is easy to grow and simply delicious! Ready to harvest in about 75-80 days.

Waltham 29 Broccoli Seeds - Growing Broccoli From Seeds

SOWING:

For an early crop start broccoli seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost or direct sow seeds in early spring or late summer. For indoor growing plant seeds 1/4" deep in peat pots or seed trays keeping soil moist at 70 degrees F. Transplant growing seedlings to the garden when they reach about 6" tall after the last expected frost. Be sure to harden off your seedlings several hours a day before transplanting so that they may get used to the outdoor weather. When transplanting to the garden, plant broccoli plants 16"-18" apart in rows 24"-36" apart. For a second crop, plant more broccoli seeds midsummer for a fall harvest. Broccoli grows best in cool weather.

Growing Waltham 29 Broccoli

Be sure to keep the plants well watered during the growing season. Keep soil moist and enriched with compost or through the use of a fertilizer. Applying mulch helps to regulate soil temperature, maintain moisture and control weeds.

HARVESTING:

Harvest the main head of broccoli when it still feels firm, tight and before the tiny buds begin to open. Simply cut main head off with a sharp knife along with 6" of stem. What will then happen is side shoots will continue to develop along the stem therefore providing little broccoli. The brocoli plant will continue to produce as long as the weather conditions remain favourable. Excellent eating fresh or cooked and they freeze very well too.
